O’Toole continued his studies in New York City at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. Later, he started his career teaching at Finch Junior College. During his lifetime O’Toole received much sponsorship for his work, including two Tiffany Foundation fellowships and the Pulitzer Traveling Scholarship in 1934.
